Network Security

Contents

This lecture is an introduction to the field of network security and its fundamental topics. We define security goals and threats, and introduce firewalls and cryptographic operations. This knowledge is used further as a starting point for the design of secure networks. Modern security protocols in modern network protocols and architectures are presented as well as vulnerabilities in existing systems. Lastly, the lecture provides an introduction to privacy in computer networks.

Lecture Mode

During the lecture period (02.11.20 - 12.02.21), lectures takes place on Mondays from 12:00 (c.t.) - 14:00 and on Tuesdays from 14:00 (c.t.) - 16:00. Due to the corona pandemic and the resulting precautionary measures, it is not possible for us to offer the lecture as a classroom event. Instead, we will broadcast the lecture as a live stream. We will provide the opportunity to ask live questions. In addition, a Moodle forum will be set up for further discussions on the lectures.

Exercise Mode

The content of the lecture is deepened and extended by accompanying exercises that also include programming assignments. We suggest that you are already familiar with Python 3 (recommended reading: Python 3 Tutorial). The exercise sheets are released weekly or bi-weekly.

The discussion of the exercises takes place within the lecture sessions as a group event. Typically, an exercise sheet is discussed two weeks after its initial release. The respective dates are announced in the lecture. Similar to the lectures, the exercises will take place online, questions will be answered live and there will be a Moodle forum for further discussions.
