University: Technical University of Munich Alexander Klein Ralph Holz Nils Kammenhuber Research: The primary research topic is represented by performance evaluation of routing protocols for wireless mesh, ad hoc and sensor networks. For that reason, we are going to extend our existing routing protocol library (OLSR, AODV, GBR, MCFA, SBR, and BATMAN) to allow a detailed comparison with respect to packet loss rate, end-to-end delay, protocol overhead and energy consumption. Moreover, the simulation framework will be used to evaluate the impact of changes to existing routing protocols before modifying the protocol stack on the real hardware. Furthermore, we are interested in simulating different routing metrics in order to study their impact on the network performance. Another topic of interest is represented by co-simulation and hardware-in-the-loop. Co-simulation mechanisms will be used to simulate and evaluate the performance of the wireless network in real-time. The basic idea is to move nodes or change network parameters to get a better impression about their impact on the network performance, e.g. creating bottle-necks or topology changes. Furthermore, we are interested in building a real-time virtualization framework by connecting OPNET with MATLAB or GNUPLOT by using HLA and Matlab C Interface. Hardware-in-the-loop features of OPNET are very promising. We are interested in connecting a test bed with a virtual test bed to simulate the performance of the real hardware in a large network. In addition, hardware-in-the-loop simulations represent a good way to simulate the perceived quality of an application if the real network traffic is routed through the virtual network including packet loss and delay.
