- 1988/1989: Master of Science in Digital Systems, Brunel University, London, U.K.; Master theses at General Electric Corporation, Hirst Research Centre, London
- 1990: Research project at the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Télécommunications (ENST), Paris
- 1992-1996: PhD in Computer Science at the University of Karlsruhe, Institute for Telematics; scholarship of the "Graduiertenkolleg" "Controllability of complex systems"
- 1997: Postdoctoral scientist at the Institut Eurecom, Sophia Antipolis, France (Marie-Curie-Fellowship of the EU)
